Thermopylae—the “Gates of Fire”—is where, in 480 BC, King Leonidas and 300 Spartans held back the massive army of the Persian King Xerxes in a version of the David and Goliath story. Continuing toward the Thessalian plain, we find Meteora, a uniquely impressive rock formation with 24 monasteries and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with unsurpassed views in every direction.
